Great! You want to volunteer...

The Carevan is staffed by trained volunteers who serve a well balanced and prepared meal to those who attend, as well as provide fruit, tea, coffee and milo. It gives the chance for those who are less fortunate to engage in conversation with our friendly volunteers and enjoy a warm meal.

Lets get started!

FAQs

What does Griffith Carevan do?

Griffith Carevan serves approximately 120 meals each week (alternating between 2 locations each week - Thomas Place Pioneer and Parkinson Crescent) on a Wednesday evening and provides additional support to those experiencing hardship in our local community.  Each week a different school, club or business prepares the main meals, and volunteers help out with everything else.  We rely on community support for our funding and continuation.

What is it like to volunteer with the Griffith Carevan?

Griffith Carevan is a complex operation and people who volunteer are assigned different roles via a roster.  We endeavor to accommodate anyone with special needs and you can note the amount of time you can commit to supporting Carevan.  You will meet a lot of new people and have some fun along the way. Volunteering is rewarding!

Who runs the Carevan?

Carevan Griffith is governed by a Sub-Committee of volunteers at the Griffith Community Centre who report to the GCC Board of Management.  They meet each month and contribute to the ongoing running of Carevan Griffith.  If you are interested to be on this Sub-Committee, please contact GCC – we are always looking for community-minded, hard-working, reliable and committed people to help keep this important community project running.

What tasks are involved?

All roles have itemized checklists to make it easy and the following is a summary of the different roles:

Volunteer Teams – Starting at 5pm at the Griffith Community Centre, the team leader delegates jobs and helps driver check everything is ready to go in the Carevan (and won’t fall in transit) and then travels to the serving location. All volunteers help to set everything up for dinner service. Volunteers are given jobs ie. plating up, serving meals/drinks, activities with patrons (games and book reading) and cleaning. Then all volunteers help pack things up and travels back to GCC to then unpack items. Two volunteers are rostered to wash up (takes approximately 20min) .

Volunteers are required from 5pm to approximately 7pm, one evening per month.
